Being Grateful Is A Catalyst For Weight Loss

July 22, 2008 · Filed Under Mind & Body

Much has been said about gratitude. Many self-help books discuss this issue and its importance. Why do you suppose they all deal with gratitude? What does gratitude possess that all the self-help books suggest it?

By gratitude we mean the heightened feeling of being blessed in your life, not the automatic “thanks” you use in certain situations to be polite. It’s the same feeling that causes your heart to skip a beat, or overwhelms you with an enormously positive sensation.

Many people believe that if they express thanks for their present situation, they will never want to change and will soon find they are overweight again. Expressing gratitude for the life you have does not mean giving up on obtaining a desired weight. For all intents and purposes this does not weaken purpose, but indeed, it compliments it!

In loving what you have in the here and now and in expressing thanks for the good things in your life, you are actually establishing a positive catalyst for embarking on much-needed change. This is not giving up by any means! On the contrary, it is a better starting point to attain renewed self-love. We actually claim that a lack of self-love ultimately leads to overweight.

This principle suits any change you wish to make in your life. For this example we will talk about your body. First, you should thank your body for taking you from one place to another, for being there with you even when you don’t take care of it, for being in the weight and shape it is and not worse. It is true that your body is not as you want it to look, but only after showing gratitude for the joy it gave, you are truly able to move on to your new perfect body. Just because you want to replace it with a newer shape and weight does not necessarily mean you are ungrateful. What would happen if you weighed 20 lbs more? What if you were incapable of moving because of sickness? Couldn’t your situation be worse than now?

Appreciate it, thank it and ask for something better. As a dear friend of ours, Steve D’Annunzio, says, “I thank my body for what it gives me in my life here and now and nevertheless I prefer a good looking healthy body.”
